CHOOSING AND BUYING A DOMAIN NAME - CREATING A WEB SITE PART 1

One of the first steps to creating a website is knowing what you want to call it. Thinking of a name and then finding out that that name is already taken can be frustrating; I can almost guarantee that your first choice of domain name is already taken. There will be some research involved here.

Take into consideration what your are creating your site for: are you going to be selling things, is it a church web-site, is it just for your own personal web place? Each one of these choices should probably use a different domain identifier (the .com/.org/.net etc. that goes on the end of your domain name). ICANN (Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers: http://www.icann.org) sets aside each one of those "top level domains" for a different purpose. .COM stands for commercial, .ORG for organizations, .NET for networking and telecommunications (I think), and so on. Picking the right top level domain may allow you to get a domain name that you prefer. Be creative - remember that you can use numbers and hyphens in your domain name.

I typically buy my domain names from Godaddy. This is only personal preference, you can buy your domain name from lots of different places. I do like the setup features that Godaddy provides and I do recommend them for that. Godaddy offers you the choice of purchasing your domain for one year or more and setting it up so that the domain will auto renew at the end of the term of purchase. They can also host your site on their servers or point your domain name at other servers via DNS (more on this in a later post).

When purchasing you may want to consider using private domain registration. This will hide the details of who purchased the domain along with personal information such as address and phone number. ICANN requires that all domain registrars maintain a publicly accessible "WHOIS" database that displays all of the contact information for all registered domains. If you don''t want you information publicly available you can opt into the private domain registration and save yourself some possible headache later. To see the difference check this out.

Do your searching, find the name and top level domain that bests fits your needs, and purchase your new domain name. Thats it for now, nothing to it!
